Chelsea have emerged as the leading contenders to secure Khadija Shaw on a free transfer, with the Jamaica international poised to leave Manchester City this summer.
Negotiations over a new contract have stalled, representing a major setback for City as they risk losing their leading goalscorer. News of Shaw’s likely departure emerged just hours after City were crowned Women’s Super League champions for the first time in a decade.
Although talks were positive at the start of the year and the club initially felt confident an agreement would be reached, frustrations have since escalated. Chelsea, who had won six consecutive league titles before City’s triumph, have made the 29-year-old their top summer transfer target.
City manager Andree Jeglertz stated in April that he hoped Shaw would extend her deal, which expires in June. However, disagreements over the length of a new contract are believed to be the primary obstacle. Chelsea are understood to have offered at least one additional year compared to what City were willing to commit to.
Shaw originally had no desire to leave and hoped to finish her career at City, but the breakdown in discussions led her to explore other options. She has been City’s top scorer for four consecutive seasons and is set to claim her third successive WSL Golden Boot after netting 19 goals in 21 appearances, with one league game remaining.
Manchester City declined to comment when approached.
Shaw will be in the spotlight this weekend as City aim to add the FA Cup to their league title. They travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday to face Chelsea in the semi-finals, with the winner advancing to face either Liverpool or Brighton at Wembley on 18 May.
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor offered no hints about Shaw’s future when asked on Thursday. “I’m seeing reports of big players being linked to Chelsea and that’s normal,” she said. “We are ambitious and want to have many top players in our team. Bunny Shaw is playing for City, so it’s not for me to comment on.”
When asked if Shaw would be on her personal wishlist, Bompastor added: “Who wouldn’t have her on their personal wishlist? Maybe someone crazy! But again, I think we need to be respectful, as Bunny is playing for City this season. She is a great player, for sure.”
The Chelsea boss also expressed confidence that the club will have “an ambitious team” next season and emphasised their ability to recruit well. Reports suggest Chelsea are ready to offer Shaw up to £1 million per year, and Bompastor admitted that signing a number nine is a high priority.
“Yeah, if you analyse our season, some of the games we played, especially in the first half, we didn’t have Sam Kerr back fully fit, Aggie Beever-Jones was struggling with injuries, and we didn’t have Mayra Ramirez for the full season,” she added. “If you compare that to Manchester City, Arsenal, and even Manchester United, and ask them to play without their number nine or top scorer, I think it would have been completely different for them. That is our reality. We know at this level, for Chelsea, it is really important to have a number nine who is performing, fully fit, and available.”

This would be one of the most intriguing and remarkable transfers in the WSL, given the long-standing rivalry between Chelsea and City.
